Article history: Received 20 July 2015 Accepted 13 November 2015 Available online 8 January 2016 Communicated by Craig Stow Weevaluate the temporal trends of totalmercury (THg) andpolychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) inwalleye (Sander vitreus) and lake trout (Salvelinus namaycush) based on approximately 40 years of contaminant data from different locations in Lake Ontario. Bayesian inference techniques are employed to parameterize four hierarchical models. Our analysis provides evidence of distinctly declining trajectories for the two contaminants in lake trout. Likewise, walleye demonstrate a decreasing PCB trend, whereas no distinct temporal shifts were found in their THg rates of change. We illustrate the capacity of our statistical framework to aid in formulating fish consumption advisories by generating customizable probability of exceedance of THg and PCB threshold human exposure levels, based on their tolerable daily intake values. Walleye consumption results in 30% lakewide exceedance frequencies of the THg threshold for the sensitive demographic group of children less than 15 years old with an average body weight of 50 kg. Lake trout PCB threshold is frequently exceeded (N80%) in all of the study sites, whereas exposure to THg through lake trout consumption appears to be within the acceptable levels for human health. The overall trends indicate that the reduced contaminant emissions have brought about positive changes in the fish contamination levels in Lake Ontario. © 2015 International Association for Great Lakes Research. Are Fish Consumption Advisories for the Great Lakes Adequately Protective from Chemical Mixture?
Background: North American Great Lakes are home to more than 140 types of fish and are famous for recreational and commercial fishing. However, presence of toxic substances has resulted in issuance of fish consumption advisories typically based on the most restrictive contaminant. Objectives: We investigate if these advisories, which typically neglect existence of a mixture of chemicals and the...

a r t i c l e i n f o When examining environmental levels of organic contaminants, much of our focus has been placed on fish due to their greater potential to bioaccumulate and their direct linkage with human as a staple of their diet. Contaminant levels in Great Lakes fish communities have been closely monitored over the last few decades, and the resulting information has been indispensable in...
متن کاملProjecting Fish Mercury Levels in the Province of Ontario, Canada and the Implications for Fish and Human Health.
Fish mercury levels appear to be increasing in Ontario, Canada, which covers a wide geographical area and contains about 250 000 lakes including a share of the North American Great Lakes. Here we project 2050 mercury levels in Ontario fish, using the recently measured levels and rates of changes observed during the last 15 years, and present potential implications for fish and human health. Per...

Certain chemicals are persistent in aquatic systems and tend to accumulate in the tissue of fish and other aquatic organisms, sometimes to levels that make them unsafe for human or wildlife consumption. The “bioaccumulative” compounds, such as polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), are the cause of a significant number of advisories against fish consumption throughout the U.S. Exposure to bioaccumul...
